    Seller Epitome

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Status: Very Good. First Edition. Second impression of the start Uk edition. Dustwrapper illustration by John Sewell. ***Very skilful in dark brownish cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Lite reading crease to the spine. Boards just slightly marked. Folio cake edges marked and foxed, mainly at the tiptop edge, only not affecting the interior pages. Internally too very good with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Pages clean. ***In a very adept colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has nor been cost-clipped, and retains the original publisher's printed price of 2.95 internet. The dustwrapper is right for the book, having 2nd impression printed on the front flap. The dustwrapper is quite worn at the edges, with some pocket-sized areas of loss at the meridian of the front panel, and to a lesser extent at the elevation of the spine. At that place is a small closed tear at the meridian of the front panel, nigh to the spine. Dark-green titles to the spine faded to white as is common with this title. [Please see scans] ***224mm x 148mm. 412 pages. ***'This extraordinary, virtually unclassifiable work has been hailed as i of the most exciting books to come out of America in recent years. ***On the simplest level, it is the story of a summer month's motorcycle trip taken past the narrator with his xi-twelvemonth-old son from their home in Minnesota to California. While they ride, the narrator delivers to the reader a serial of discourses which range over a multitude of topics, from motorcycle maintenance itself, through a search for how to live and an inquiry into 'what is best' to a philosophy that can reconcile science, religion and humanism. ***But on another, and connecting, level the book is the story of the narrator's visit to the 'forgotten tomb of his past' and his confrontation in that location with a ghost. The ghost is called Phaedrus and is his former self, a bright, questioning human being who in his try to make sense of his life went mad, underwent shock therapy and 'died' - and has now returned. He and his son have to face that ghost together. He also has to face the fact that his relationship with his son has been deteriorating during the journey. This is the last problem to which he finds a reconciliation. ***An Autobiography of the mind and the body, Zen and the Fine art of Motorcycle Maintenance takes the reader on a trip - in a literal, emotional and philosophical sense - that is not only unforgettable but also unlike anything he has previously experienced.' ***'Brilliant and original --- everybody should read it.' [P. J. Kavanagh, Guardian] ***'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is an unforgettable trip'. [Time] Quote and review quotes from inside forepart and rear of dustwrapper blurb respectively. ***Second impression of the first UK edition, published in the same year as the showtime impression, in its original attractively color-illustrated dustwrapper designed by John Sewell, with faults as described above. A cult classic. An iconic twentieth century literary and philosophical title. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - delight contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
