I Worked at Walmart Before How Easy Is It to Work There Again

Alistair has worked in a multifariousness of positions at Walmart over the grade of five years.

A lot of job seekers look to Walmart for employment, but working for America's favorite mass-scale retailer is not all it's cracked up to be.

A lot of chore seekers expect to Walmart for employment, but working for America's favorite mass-scale retailer is non all it'due south croaky up to be.

Is Walmart a Good Place to Work?

If you're seeking employment, you lot may be considering applying for one of the many positions bachelor through Walmart. Their retail stores are huge, and they take locations all over the identify, and so information technology seems like as adept a place equally whatsoever to look for work. Unfortunately for many starry-eyed chore seekers, working at Walmart doesn't often plough out to be a peculiarly pleasant or rewarding experience.

From poor healthcare benefits to hour-cut, I'll give you the inside scoop as to why working for one of the nation's largest retailers is a bad move both personally and professionally.

My Experience Working at Walmart

I'm 23, and I've worked for Walmart on three separate occasions, doing many different jobs in the course of five years. These are the chief positions I've held:

  • Overnight Stocker (8 Months)
  • Overnight Inventory Managing director (7 months)
  • Cart Pusher (2 years)
  • Electronics Acquaintance/Jail cell Telephone Salesperson (3 months)
  • Optician/Vision Heart Associate (seven months)

So yes, I've worked a range of jobs and spent a inexplainable amount of time in and effectually Walmart over the years. Luckily, I never have to go dorsum to that dreaded land of awfulness over again, and I'g hoping this commodity can save some innocent folks from making the same mistakes I did.

Some of the downsides discussed in this article may apply to other retail jobs as well, but I'm speaking specifically nearly Walmart, as that's where my experience lies. Beneath are the four main reasons why you shouldn't work for Walmart. Each of these is discussed in greater detail in the sections that follow. A notation on Walmart managers and an FAQ section are provided as well.

4 Reasons Non to Go a Job at Walmart

  1. They offer employees terrible healthcare plans.
  2. They cutting employee hours to continue them office-time.
  3. They mess with consumers psychologically.
  4. They treat their employees poorly.
While Walmart has changed its look and branding over the years, its poor treatment of employees has remained the same.

While Walmart has changed its await and branding over the years, its poor treatment of employees has remained the same.

ane. They Offering Employees Terrible Healthcare Plans

Walmart offers some of the worst healthcare plans I've ever seen. Some would say that they're better than nil, simply I disagree. I paid for the best program and had 71 dollars come out of every check, just when I went to the doctor, I yet had a mountain of a deductible to conquer. There are no co-pay plans to be plant, and the co-insurance was always lxxx/twenty subsequently the deductible, which made hitting your out-of-pocket maximum similar climbing Mount Everest.

Employee Health Insurance vs. Private Wellness Insurance

I had their insurance on two carve up occasions. One was on the "low deductible, loftier premium" programme, and the other was on the "loftier deductible, low premium" plan. My claims were denied for no apparent reason by the insurance underwriter, who was incredibly difficult to become in contact with.

And so, I just dropped Walmart'southward goofy plans and got a personal program from United Healthcare, and voila—I have a $25 co-pay for all doctor and therapy visits, and a deductible that is manageable. Oh, and they pay 100% after the deductible. This all costs less than I was paying for my Walmart plans.

The plans take gone upward every twelvemonth in price while going down in quality. And don't even think about blaming Obamacare for that—other companies haven't responded this mode.

The Healthcare Waiting Period

The company has begun to impede new hires with a waiting period of one year before they can even get Walmart's wellness insurance. This may actually be a good thing. In that location'south and so much wrong with the healthcare offered by Walmart that I genuinely feel sorry for any employee that is stuck in a one-year commitment with them.

The way their "open enrollment" works is that you take a one-month window each yr (new hires are almost always hired to miss this window) to plan out your next yr'south healthcare needs. You can't alter these choices once the window passes, and you lot're locked in for an entire year. Just massive life changes (like dying) can get them to change your benefits when it's not "open up enrollment" time. Super artificial.

2. They Cut Employee Hours to Keep Them Function-Time

Back when I first started, I was a full-time worker and got my 40 hours a calendar week, and while it was third-shift menial labor (stocking), it was a solid paycheck. I was cool with that. But as the years rolled on, Walmart plant that hiring two part-fourth dimension workers instead of one full-time worker is much more than profitable because they can deny benefits to any part-time worker and cut that person's hours to zero if they feel like it. They have done that to me, and they will do that to you if you piece of work for them.

The Dangers of Being Full-Fourth dimension

If you are one of those few people who has full-time status, watch your back. They're gunning for you lot. They're looking for ways to get you lot to either pace down to part-time or quit entirely since you're not simply reaping the benefits of having been there for a long time (oh my, a few more than dollars an hour!), merely you're too consistently getting about twice the hours of anyone else.

Employee Surveilance

I've talked with the loss prevention assembly and have friends in places that have admission to information that I clearly am not supposed to know, and so I know stuff like this was happening. They were keeping cameras on full-fourth dimension associates and watching their clock-in and clock-out habits for whatever possible reason to trip them up. Sometimes, word fabricated its manner to a particular employee, and they fussed and fumed, and yeah—they got a coaching for poor operation in return.

Manager Intervention

Another way they try to "smoke out" the veterans of the visitor is by dropping their hours below the designated minimum that was established way back when merely to badger them. The minimum number of hours a full-time employee is supposed to receive is 35, and the maximum number a function-time employee may receive is 33.

I've seen a manager requite a full-time acquaintance 28 hours and a office-time acquaintance 32 hours just to send a passive-aggressive message that while at that place are "rules" at Walmart, decisions are made based on conspiracy and gossip instead of it beingness a "family" or "squad" like their propaganda would have yous believe.

The way Walmart's stores are laid out is no accident.

The manner Walmart'southward stores are laid out is no accident.

3. They Mess With Consumers Psychologically

This comes directly from the oral cavity of my most recent store manager, Tom.

"You know why nosotros sell everything for cheap? You know why nosotros say: 'Salvage coin. Alive better?' It's because we want our customers to take the money they hither and buy more of our shit. Unproblematic as that. The more than nosotros sell, the higher our volume. Even if we make razor-thin profits, the more money nosotros make, and the more repeat customers nosotros make, and the more we rule the market. Observe, our stock doesn't rise by dollars; it rises by a trickle of cents over years, slowly creeping college and higher. That's how we practise things, and when you make the customers buy more stuff—when you make full their cart up—that's how y'all secure your job, and that's how yous secure your company'southward future for years to come up."

I wasn't surprised at the content of his bulletin because I'd known all of this before; I was just astounded that he was then flippant about it. We were perpetuating a cycle of tricking consumers into ownership substandard crap with substandard service because our prices were lower than everyone else's. This is still the way information technology works.

Greeters and Carts

It'due south the little things. When the greeters offering you a cart, information technology's supposed to brand yous think, "Oh wow, I feel welcome hither. Thank you lot!" but the truthful intention is to set y'all up to overspend. That'due south what a shopping cart is to a consumer. If they don't have a cart, they can't buy as much. When they have a cart, they feel indebted somehow to themself and the store to at least fill it up earlier leaving.

It'due south a psychological flim-flam that is non only underhanded, only it's also i that I participated in for years unknowingly. Equally a cart-pusher, I gave customers carts constantly. I didn't realize I was participating in the consumerism cycle.

Product Placement

They put things in sure places for a reason. That's why they remodel the stores every few years; new statistics give them new data that shows them how to make the nigh revenue via the layout of the store.

Essential items are located in the back of the shop—always. Stuff y'all don't demand is off to the side and there for y'all whenever y'all feel like splurging, but the real stuff—like food, milk, toilet paper, the chemist's shop, and the remainder of the essentials—is in the back of the store.

Okay, so what, it'southward only a matter of a hundred feet, right? Wrong. There are what they phone call "features" in the middle of the aisles that are usually in accordance with any is seasonal. Football game season has soda, fries, beer, and junk food. Valentine'due south Day has flowers, chocolates, etc. These features are all throughout the store and are meant to entice y'all into dropping them into your cart.

The "Oh, Shiny!" Effect

Whenever you walk into the general merchandise archway of the store, the first thing you lot see is not the random seasonal purchase features around y'all, but the very dorsum of the store straight alee. Y'all see the 70-inch LED televisions on the wall playing whatever random loop they accept set up.

The consumer'southward ownership urge is set off like a drug addict when he or she sees fresh product lying on the table. They know they don't need it. They know they already accept a good TV. Just await how shiny it is. They must go and investigate. And so they do, and while they're back there, they end upwardly buying a new Blu-ray player, an HDMI cable, and a bottom, but notwithstanding shiny tv that the associate working back there talked them into (I worked that job, so I know how that goes.).

The electronics department is the most profitable place in the store, and yet information technology is in the back. Why? Because by the fourth dimension you lot make it to the electronics department, you've already picked upward several things you don't demand and several things you do need. You're already exasperated past your trip to Walmart, and this refreshing land of movies, games, and everything you dear sounds like a good idea . . . until you walk into the lion's den named Credit Card State—which brings me to a betoken that needs to be made.

Walmart Credit Cards

Yes, every retail store is required to push its retail credit cards. Merely what gimmicks does Walmart use to sell these? Wordplay. In the Vision Eye, nosotros were the best at selling credit cards because we had more time with the customer than whatever of the other cashiers in the store. Nosotros had more than time to mess with the client'south mind.

I told my managing director (who hated me) that I would not partake in such fraudulent activities. She said I had no choice, and it was a control. Yes, I received a "coaching," which is like a demerit. These stack up, and if yous get iii or iv of them, you're fired. I received this coaching for not wanting to disillusion the customers that we're supposed to exist serving. I was incredulous!

So, how do they try to deceive customers into getting the bill of fare?

  • Provide as little data near what the carte is equally possible.
  • Tell them they're "pre-qualified," which they volition take to mean "pre-canonical."
  • Tell them that everyone they've seen gets approved, and information technology only takes a infinitesimal.
  • Tell them that they can spend their new card today to make even more and meliorate purchases (like meliorate eyeglass lenses) since they accept a new source of credit.

Every fourth dimension 1 of these drug-deals went downwardly, I cringed and held dorsum my fury. My director loved it. She was a sociopath, but to me, it seemed like casting out a pole into fresh waters. When you catch the biggest bass in the waters, you talk it into buying a credit card. It makes no sense. They're already screwed past beingness there in the showtime identify, so why do we accept to screw them more than? It makes me angry only thinking well-nigh it.

The "Site-to-Store" Choice

Walmart messes with consumers in other ways, too. Some other is the "site-to-shop" option. You lot order a production online, and you don't have to pay shipping since it goes to the shop.

Where practice y'all pick information technology up? No, at that place'due south no drive-thru or load-upwards option. You have to walk to the very back of the shop and hunt for someone to get the product you lot ordered. It's usually the photo lab acquaintance who is currently dealing with a line of customers, and so you have to wait, and wait, and . . . oh await, you're in the electronics department! How did yous become in that location? Well . . . might as well look effectually.

Are you getting the picture show?

4. They Treat Their Employees Poorly

Then, we've covered Walmart'due south bogus healthcare, part-fourth dimension/full-time schemes, and management conspiracies . . . but in that location'due south more than. They set goals that are unreachable so that they only have to give out the blank minimum in terms of raises each twelvemonth, and they tin cull to not give employees raise at all.

Unrealistic Expectations

To receive the full enhance (which I have), yous have to literally sell your soul to Walmart, piece of work every day like information technology's your final day (which I did), lie to every manager (play the game), work in as many different areas of the store every bit possible, and pick up extra shifts from other people in the store that are ill or otherwise can't brand it.

Keeping up this lifestyle is non only taxing, but information technology's also unhealthy. Eventually, you're going to burn out as I did. So, they'll ask, "Why has your functioning dropped?" I had to tell them that I'm not a superhero, I do get tired now and again, and, well, living at Walmart all calendar week takes its cost on your sanity over the years.

Unethical Terminations

They reserve the right to use any possible reason in their playbook to fire you. For instance, let's say you are the shop's top salesperson and get along with your coworkers, but you had to miss a month of work due to mental affliction. Your dominate uses a fault you lot made out of human error to not merely fire you after you were on unpaid exit for a calendar month but also writes up the termination and so that you lot won't receive whatever unemployment benefits.

They shuffle you lot like a drunken man's deck. If you work inside the shop, you are subject to being thrown wherever the managers come across fit, regardless of whether yous have proficiency in that area or are even so in training in the process necessary to succeed. And when you fail or get a customer complaint, the manager simply asks, "Why didn't yous handle that better?"

I could go on forever.

Everything You Need to Know About Walmart Managers

The showtime thing I will say is that Walmart managers are the people yous should pity the most. They are the ones who accept had their souls ground into dust and then sucked up into the vacuum of the Evil Empire. They no longer have souls, and therefore, they can manage new hires and veterans alike.

Ofttimes, the managers come from nowhere. They literally pop upward one day, and then they're your dominate. I asked one of these managers (he was a co-managing director who appeared out of thin air; Antwan was his name), "Who are you? You just show upwards out of nowhere and await people to mind to you?"

He said, "I'm Antwan, and I'm your boss, and I need you to do this, this, and that, and written report back to me in an 60 minutes. Got it?"

I just stood at that place. "We're both humans, that much I can deem. But it seems like you recollect you've get a God or something. What is that?"

He got aroused and walked off. He didn't arroyo me for a few weeks later that, and in the meantime, he only watched me exercise my work from afar. He saw that I was a highly motivated worker who did things the most efficient style. He gained respect for me despite my cursing statements. And so he started ordering me around over again.

I said, "Look, Antwan, correct? I know you want to be superlative-dog, alpha-male person, and that's absurd, but tin you do it elsewhere?"

He wrote me up. I don't blame him. I was sick of new faces popping out of thin air and ordering me around similar I was some meat-puppet. That's how the managers acquire to care for anybody—like they're just warm bodies incapable of doing annihilation on their own. That'due south why the management position exists in the first place, I suppose.

Non all managers are evil, but all managers are stressed. And a stressed manager is cranky. And a cranky managing director is hard to live with. They make your life suck because their life sucks. It's a terrible trickle-down effect that people looking to apply at Walmart just don't know about. If simply they knew . . .

Oft-Asked Questions Nearly Working at Walmart

Beneath are some of the most common questions I hear from Walmart employees and people who are thinking about applying. Things practice vary both over time and from store to shop, so some of the answers provided below may not exist accurate in all cases.

What Are "Occurrences" (Points) and How Many Are Employees Immune?

At Walmart, employees can be terminated for accumulating occurrences, or points. Think of these like points on a driver's license. Showing upwardly late to piece of work might exist worth one-half a point. Missing a shift after notifying your manager might be worth a whole bespeak. Missing a shift without notifying your manager might country you ii points (or occurrences).

Generally, newer employees who accept been with the visitor for 6 months or fewer will be terminated after 4 points/occurrences. More tenured employees may accrue up to nine occurrences before termination.

How Long Practice Yous Have to Work at Walmart to Transfer?

Normally, employees must have worked at a Walmart for at least half-dozen months before they can apply for a transfer to a different store. Very occasionally, employees may exist immune to transfer later fewer than six months due to hardship or special circumstances.

What Are Coachings and How Long Do They Stay on Your Record?

At Walmart, a coaching is basically an case of a superior having to speak to y'all verbally or give you a written alert regarding your functioning. This can happen due to tardiness, behavior, safety issues, or other concerns. Generally, an employee's get-go coaching is a word, but those that follow may be either written or in-person.

Coachings typically stay on an employee'southward record for one year. If an employee receives iv coachings, they are often terminated.

Can You Switch Departments at Walmart?

Some people discover information technology easy to transfer to open positions in other departments, while others find it difficult. Factors similar your relationship with your manager and other college-ups, whether or not you take coachings on your tape, and what sorts of positions are currently available may touch on the likelihood of a request to switch departments existence granted.

How Long Practise Y'all Have to Work at Walmart to Get a Raise?

Employees are not guaranteed raises, but employee functioning is usually evaluated subsequently three months, and then again every vi months. When employees do go raises, information technology usually happens at or after to 1 of these evaluations. Employees with coachings on their records are less likely to receive raises.

What Does Walmart Exercise Right?

Walmart does give to diverse charities, which are oftentimes run and funded past employees. They as well do a lot of recycling. Where Walmart does one practiced thing, yet, information technology's always at the expense of something or someone else. That'southward how they thrive. They do give pretty high yearly raises to those who are willing to sell their soul to reach them.

They also offering a consequent paycheck. It may vary in hours, but they practise offer coin for pretty mindless labor. If your sanity can handle all of what I've detailed above, and so accept at it. I'd rather be homeless and eating out of a dumpster than work in that location again, but that's just my personal preference.

Walmarts low prices are a good thing, merely they come at the expense of suppliers, employees, and every other retailer in the community.

Then, Is Walmart a Bad Place to Piece of work and Shop?

Admittedly. Shop at Aldis or at a wonderful site chosen Amazon.com. Information technology has pretty much everything under the sun, and they evangelize. "Amazing" and "Amazon" even have some letters in common.

Estimate for yourself, but know that I pray for you if you lot have applied at Walmart and wish to piece of work there. You volition not discover any happiness, fulfillment, or success there. It is a pathway that ends in frustration, disappointment, and shame, and these are not smashing feelings. So, don't do it! Practise some good for the globe. Work for a reputable company that treats its employees correct. Such places do exist. Y'all can do this!

Reading your article gave me the impression that you're very self-entitled and feel that managers shouldn't pop up out of nowhere and boss y'all around. Fact is; they do and thats what they are hired for specifically. You too try to demean walmart for using psychological tactics to sell their products but the reality is that literally every single company does that.... even Aldi's and Amazon. You trying to bash the new co-managing director was despicable as y'all slammed someone new coming in telling you what your JOB is for the 24-hour interval and instead of proverb "yeah sure" you go down his throat ridiculing him for doing his job. Reading this whole thing just gave me the impression that you're the kind of person to shit on a law officer giving you a ticket for going 80 in a 50 and requite him a lecture on why law and law enforcers are just a part of a organisation that doesnt apply to your snowflake mentality.

EF'ED OVER on May 22, 2019:

Zilch but facts and i tin can personnaly attest to that. I worked for Walmart in the for 1 1/2 yrs. After being at that place for 6 months, i was awarded the *Happy to Help* pin. I was told that i was the starting time and ONLY person in the history of the shop (in the deli dept) to recieve that pin. You would think that a practiced matter, right? Not so much. Some of the ladies i worked with had been at that place xiii, 14, 15 yrs and never received a pivot. Not my fault... i EARNED the pivot through all my difficult work, a pleasant attitude towards customers and willingness to help all my customers to the best of my ability. Anyway, the pin became a problem for me later on some time because the ladies would requite me a difficult time about information technology. (I forgot to mention that, at my walmart in that location is a huge language barrier. Most everyone, employees and customers speak Spanish or very broken English). So, i had to overcome that to begin with. Direction would always inquire for more, more popcorn craven, more rotisserie craven, more fried chicken. Cooking didnt stop until 7pm and chicken ovens run until 8pm. We would e'er do our best to produce the results management wanted. So once they got what they asked for, tthey would need more from us. Somewhen, people were calling in here and at that place (something that rarely ever happened) because nosotros were all exhausted. So of form, decreased manpower = decreased Production. To a reasonable person that would exist mutual sence. Non FOR WALMART Management... information technology got to the betoken that, if we saw a member of Direction coming towards the deli, we already knew that we were going to get yelled at for something and belittled, because that is the ONLY time they would come up dorsum there. If that isnt bad enough, it was most always washed right in front of our customers. Nothing we always did in the deli was right according to Management. Not one fourth dimension did any if them come back to tell us, Good job guys, or keep upwardly the good piece of work or they couldnt fifty-fifty forcefulness a simple "Thanks" out of their ridiculing mouth. So over time it was taking a serious toll on me, mentally, physically, emotionally. My cocky confidence plummeted, I regularly started doubting myself and my ability to perform my job to the best of my ability. I decided to confront my dept manager about everything and was told it would be taken care of. That managing director transfered and so we got a new one. Of course, my complaint was swept under the rug because everything was still the aforementioned. I waited for a while to come across if anyone was going to address my complaint. My work conditions just grew more than hostile. So i broke down and talked to the new dept director. Told her everything and that my working condition are very hostile and i couldn't and didnt want to be there. She told me dont cry and not to worry. She knows im am first-class worker and she would take care of it. She took care of it alright, 2 weeks later on, i came back from my luncheon and she asked to to follow her to the back office. On the manner back i was thinking, oh thank goodness, she actually handeled it like she promised. Got to the function and i was greeted past an Assistant Manager from a different shop and our LP. The AM asked me to sit while the LP closed the door behind me. Long story brusk. I was accused of shoplifting from the visitor. I was told they did an investigation and they have all the proof against me. I asked when this was supposed to accept happened, when they told me the engagement, i started laughing and telling them haha, Thats funny. Why am i here for real? And they told me again and that they were serious. I couldnt believe it, and then i asked for the date once more to brand sure i heard them right. So they told me. (I forgot to annotation it higher up but, 4/28/19 is when i fabricated my complaint to my DM.) Commencement fourth dimension you did information technology was 4/28/19. I asked to see their proof and was denied. They continually tried to pressure me into admitting guilt. I told them i didnt exercise anything and im not going to admit to anything i didnt do. I was called a lier, accused of being a theif and later on proclaiming my innocence no matter what they threatened or promised with, they finally told me i was being terminated immediately for shoplifting from the store. Asked for my writtrn argument and i wrote it. And so we were all sitting there quite andbi finally asked "what are nosotros doing? Are we done now? LP guy told me "We are waiting on the cops to get here". I have never NEVER been in trouble with the police or whatever where ive worked. My criminal record is spotless, and so is my piece of work record, no write upwardly or coachings, my performance evals were always good, and im non gulity of their accusations. There was simply 1 reason why i was terminated and i reason but. RETALIATION . Im fighting this all the way. I now have an arrest record and criminal charges on my record now. Ive been told i now have PTSD because of all this. I refuse to simply lay down and let them destroy my life. They volition regret the quack choices accusations and actions they've fabricated against me.

DONT FALL INTO THE Same NIGHTMARE THAT Then MANY OTHERS Take. WE ARE HEAR TO WARN YOU PLZ Listen TO US.

Glad I found this page I need to rant a petty bit about Walmart considering WOW was I lied to. I started working at Walmart back in April. I decided to do this considering a family fellow member recommended it and honestly, its the merely other reason why this family unit member withal works here. I got sick in June with a cold, and so I called off so I could get over this because I'm not comfortable touching people'due south nutrient while being sick, and who wants to work when their not feeling well enough....I knew I wasn't past my ninety days, but I seriously felt really Sick. Anyways...this lovely cold that I had and then quickly became an ear infection. I went to the physician they prescribe me with a useless antibody for 5 days I started to go better, but and then afterward five days the infection came dorsum. I tried to stick information technology out at piece of work, but the pain was unbearable, and I couldn't hear for anything. Had to leave work early....SO I left work went to the md once more, they gave me a good antibiotic, and it kicked it's ass and I got a doc notation and my manager takes care of it so I can return back to piece of work. Sooo fast forward to August I go sick AGAIN, but this fourth dimension information technology kept me out for about 6 days significant I got 6 occurrences. This is Past my 90 days, listen yous, AND I brought a doctors annotation for this as well and showed my note to my managing director, who said that he'd take care of information technology, and to my knowledge, I was good. Fast forwards to September... I go chosen back to the office, and I'm shown that I have vii.5 occurrences huh? and they decided to "permit me go" because of this. First of all...I...was past my 90 days, and to my noesis, that's not enough occurrences to allow me to exist fired? and the half-dozen occurrences out of the vii in half should have been eliminated because I brought a doc notation proving that I was sick, at least that's what I was told by my manager, that he would "take care of it" Also the managing director who fired me basically told me that doctors notes don't matter??? then. . . WHY was I told IN orientation, that if I'm gone for more than 4 days that I would have to provide a doctors note???? and that'south After y'all've been there for xc days??? I was hired in April my 90 days so...I was past my xc days in July then that means that even at 7.5 occurrences I shouldn't have been let become and I brought doc notes so this should take NEVER happened. SOOOOOOO lets get to the next mean solar day after I'm fired, they call me upwards because they realized they fabricated a mistake and needless to say I'grand back at wallyworld. I was really on the fence about coming dorsum, but I do savour the people I work with.

...everything said here is true. I've worked at wal-Mart for vii years and information technology has become obvious that the hunt is on for new employees that tin can pass the groundwork check and the drug test.

The burnout rate is 3-5 years

And anybody should have short turn goals no matter where they work.

The problem I come across, and it's serious, is the thieves.

They could mayhap bring Wal-mart down

Orion-71 on May 09, 2014:

These and other comments left regarding Wal-Mart have helped me determine whether to say with them. I'm starting work soon every bit an Overnight Stocker, and realize now that information technology has no job security.

I've recently had to quit a chore at another more reputable company nether similar circumstances, where management was trying to find some reason to fire me or force me to quit. They started with a hostile work environment for several months, when that didn't work, they began to single me out for every fault I made, regardless that my coworker was just every bit guilty. But because of his exceedingly proficient rapport with my boss, my dominate had no intention of firing him.

So terrible managers are everywhere you go. That'southward the real problem. They are terrible because they use their dominance to make emotionally based decisions. Like you said, if they are stressed out, they deliberately make other employees feel the aforementioned or worse. They are like bad "cops". They get off on their authority, they derive satisfaction from it. But unlike police, they are also estimate, jury and executioner.

I actually overheard ii managers talking around me and other customers early in the morning, joking about how easy information technology will be just to hire some new college pupil for something, and pay them minimum wage. When you walk past a manager, they don't acknowledge your presence, they are reluctant to even movement out of your way (they desire You lot to acknowledge THEM). Which is hilariously hypocritical given their "10 foot" rule towards customers.

I've worked at walmart on overnights as a stocker/IMS/cashier and allow me tell you, they practically forced me to throw freight (lone) in HBA/cosmetics my Unabridged PREGNANCY. WHEN I WAS 9 MONTHS Pregnant I WAS STILL FORCED TO Elevator PALLETS AND THROW thirty-50 POUND BOXES. Alone. I brought a doctors note stating hey, I tin can't elevator more than 25 and they told me they'd have to let me go. Like wtf. Fuck them.

Wow Walmart sounds like a terrible identify. Glad we don't have one in the UK. I agree near Amazon. Never had whatsoever problems with them.

Annette Hendley from London, United Kingdom on March 09, 2013:

Wow. I don't alive in the U.s., just Walmart sounds real evil. Amazon is great, I agree with you there. Do about of my shopping at that place.

Carrie Lee Nighttime from Northeast U.s. on March 05, 2013:

Arghness: Thank you for sounding off on a very fustrating industry :) But understand that most high volume retail chains have the same agenda and protocol (doesn't get in right). I work for a large retailer and I can say that they hire mostly part timers to avoid paying benefits. Likewise when a person quits they don't supplant them, leaving less people to do more than back breaking work. Its not a fair world, merely information technology is work and I appreciate the money. Thank you for taking the time to write an honest article, hope y'all are meant for something dandy :)

Yves on March 04, 2013:

Companies have to market their stores well; information technology would be absurd for them not to. But I hear you lot in that all lower level jobs are tough, especially for idealists who long for something better. Only getting a better job takes time and patience.

For example, I know someone who works at Walmart. He'due south had two eye surgeries, for which Walmart paid a great percentage; he literally paid only a pittance. He started out every bit a cashier (which he hated), simply stuck information technology out until he could work in inventory (which he enjoys). He is a lead worker and is making nearly $xvi an 60 minutes. Walmart held his position even though he was out for a long time during his surgery and recovery.

Equally for Greeters offering carts, well... most of them don't. And if they did, I wouldn't mind. If I need information technology, great, and if I don't, I just say "No thank you."

You may determine not to post this comment, and that's OK with me, only I felt compelled to point out that your attitude isn't cracking, and information technology is that which makes managers bristle; it's also the best fashion to Non get a promotion or a raise - in whatever visitor.

If you have a mental illness, then that explains why you may have a tendency to feel such keen frustration on the job. It sounds like yous are a very difficult worker. Perhaps having a job where you could mostly be past yourself, without having to deal with micro-managers, or managers period, would be better for yous. I know what it's like to work "dumb" jobs. It'south the pits, merely it'southward "the pits" everywhere, not just Walmart.

Kelley Marks from Sacramento, California on March 03, 2013:

This is a very informative article - y'all should go many hits on this one. As for jobs in retail, many years agone I worked at K-Mart - but non for long, and I vowed never go back. Maybe Wal-Mart is worse. Who can say? As far every bit I tin can tell, retail jobs, in general, are crap. Every bit for the Wal-Mart healthcare plan, I'm non surprised it's essentially worthless. Subsequently!

Aldene Fredenburg from Southwestern New Hampshire on February 28, 2013:

I've thought for years that employers who offer benefits to total-time employees should be required to prorate those benefits for part-fourth dimension employees: someone who works xx hours should get l percent of the benefits of a full-time worker, including vacation and holiday time, bonuses, and payment into a public healthcare plan. That would stop employers like Walmart from messing with people'southward work status.

vinayak1000 from Minneapolis on February 28, 2013:

I've been hearing quite a few stories well-nigh how Wal-Mart treats its employees badly. My mom doesn't store their anymore considering of this.

Additionally, I don't either but that's mostly because the shopping experience doesn't match up to Target, Best Buy (for shiny stuff of course), etc.

Thanks for sharing here, Arghness.

catgypsy from the S on February 27, 2013:

Very honest hub! Information technology's a shame that people have to work under those atmospheric condition. I don't blame you lot for getting fed up. I've personally never liked Walmart, but take shopped there. I don't anymore because I feel their prices are not as low every bit they used to be and the quality of a lot of the products is terrible. I'm with you...give me Amazon any solar day!
